Each first weekend of the month, Lincoln Castle have a dog friendly weekend - a gem that was actually spotted by my mum.
The dogs are allowed in the castle grounds, around the castle walls and even in the old prison and it's church! They must be kept on their leads and aren't allowed in the cafe (although Hal did manage to scrounge a Bonio from the shop assistants!).
The walk around the castle walls are the best part of the visit by far, with brilliant views of Lincoln Cathedral and looking over the tops of the old terraced houses into the distance. The walls go all around the castle and it's grounds, with plenty of information plaques retelling the history of the castle and it's towers, prison and court house.
After the walls, we took Hal to look round the Victorian prison, where you can go inside most of the cells and see how the male and female prisoners lived and see some artefacts that have been found. The prison church is also available to go round, to see how prisoners sat in small cubicles when being preached to. Hal wasn't fond of these cubicles because the doors kept closing on him!
After we'd wondered around the castle grounds and taken in all it's sights (and Hal had received plenty of attention from passers by), we went round the corner to a local tea room/cafe, which allowed dogs in. A few of the cafes/pubs let dogs in but most have seating outside.
Only a short walk from the castle entrance is Lincoln Cathedral which is worth a gawp at, and if you're feeling brave take a trek down Steep Hill! At least your pooch can drag you back up it!
A lovely, and different, day out with the pup - definitely worth a visit once the castle reopens it's dog friendly weekends.
Or check them out on Instagram or Facebook where they create events for these dog friendly weekends.
Hal's dad appears in most of these photos from our weekend back in February (luckily before lockdown) as Hal's mum is usually the photographer!
